PURPOSE:To perform the input and conversion of KANA (Japanese syllabary) data as indicated by its reading way without increasing much the dictionary capacity, by using a control means which changes the KANA data and retrieves a dictionary when the data corresponding to the input KANA data is not included in the dictionary. CONSTITUTION:The key input given through a keyboard 20 is waited for after the application of a power supply. When the KANA character key is operated on the keyboard 20, the input KANA character data is stored in a read memory 2 through a key judgement procedure. Then 1 is added to a retrieving read length register 31 and the document data stored in a document memory 10 and the KANA character data stored in the memory 2 are displayed on a display device 24 to wait for the key input. When a selection key is depressed, the KANA character data is shifted to the memory 10 from the memory 2. Then 9 is stored in a read length register 30 and a key input waiting mode is set after the display of documents. The KANA/KANJI (Chinese characters) conversion is carried out with the depress of a conversion key. When this conversion is over, a key input waiting mode is set via the display of documents. This program is stored in a ROM 22 and carried out by a CPU 21.
