PURPOSE:To efficiently perform inspection processing by moving an ultrasonic probe spirally, setting a scanning range for a body to be inspected over a look at a scanning image, and then moving he ultrasonic probe reciprocally and scanning the rest of the scanning range. CONSTITUTION:The body 2 to be inspected is dipped in a water tank 1 on a stage 21a. The ultrasonic probe 13 is arranged at the upper part of the water tank 1 and moved by a scanning device 4 in an X and a Y direction to make a scan. In the beginning of the scan, a spiral scan is made from outside to inside at specific pitch in a rectangular shape shown by a solid line. At this time, a controller controls the width of the pitch according to a frequency division rate and pitch calculation program. Further, a signal from the probe 3 is processed into an image, which is displayed on a CRT, and an adjustment is so made that the body 2 to be inspected is put in the scanning range of the spiral movement. Then, the probe 3 is moved reciprocally as shown by a dotted line to scan the rest of the scanning range. Thus, a proper scanning range is set by the spiral scanning and then the reciprocal movement is entered, so the inspection is performed efficiently.
