PURPOSE:To improve the durability, by designing the location of hydraulic lash adjusters in such a manner that the components of loads to be applied through rocker arms to the adjusters in a direction perpendicular to the adjusters are counter directed. CONSTITUTION:In the valve operating mechanism, intake and exhaust valves 4 and 5 arranged at a predetermined included angle are opened and closed by rotation of a cam shaft 6 through rocker arms 7 and 8 rockably supported by hydraulic lash adjusters 30. The hydraulic lash adjusters 30 are located on division lines Ls dividing included angle theta defined by lines Lc lying on contact points Pr between the rocker arms 7 and 8 and a base circle of the cam shaft 6 and centers O of arcs of slippers of the rocker arms 7 and 8 and by axes Lv of the valves 4 and 5. With this arrangement, an angular moment to by generated in the hydraulic lash adjusters 30 is reduced, and accordingly a frictional force between the adjusters 30 and tappet holders 29 may be reduced.
