PURPOSE:To hold an air surplus factor of air-fuel mixture at a specified value and to improve starting properties of an engine, by a method wherein a stop valve, shutting off the flow of air for starting, is located in a pilot passage, through which air for starting flows in a cylinder, and which runs to a part of the cylinders of a gas valve type large gas engine. CONSTITUTION:A starting valve 2, opened by pressing down a piston 7 by the feed of air for starting to a control port 8, is situated in each of plural cylinders 1 of an engine. A pilot passage 14 is connected to the control port 8, and the pilot passage 14 is connected to the output port of a distributing valve 15. A compressed air feed passage 10 is connected to a feed port 5 of each starting valve 2. In this case, A stop valve 17 is located in the pilot passage 14 leading to a part of the cylinders 1. A stop valve 17 is closed at a point of time when rotation of the engine is stopped during starting of the engine, and by stopping the feed of air for starting to a part of the cylinders 1, an air surplus factor of air-fuel mixture is held at a specified value, and starting of the engine is facilitated.
