PURPOSE:To improve the muffling effect, by partitioning the interior of a muffling cylinder into a plurality of chambers by partition boards, communicating the chambers with each other through pipes, and mounting a sound absorbing material on the partition board at the exhaust upstream end to thereby prevent the vibration of the partition board and convert the flow direction of exhaust gas. CONSTITUTION:Two partition boards 3 and 4 are provided in a muffling cylinder 1 in axially spaced relationship from each other to thereby partition the interior of the muffling cylinder 1 into three expansion chambers 6-8. A pipe 13 is provided to pass through the partition boards 3 and 4 and communicate the expansion chambers 6-8. Other pipes 14 are provided on opposite sides of the pie 13 to pass through the partition board 4 on the downstream side and communicate the expansion chambers 6-8. Further, a sound absorbing material 20 is mounted through a presser plate 19 having plural vent holes 18 on a surface of the partition board 3 exposed to the third expansion chamber 8. With this arrangement, the vibration of the partition board 3 may be absorbed by the sound absorbing material 20, and the flow direction of exhaust gas may be converted, thereby improving the muffling effect.
