Process for the decontamination of materials which have been subjected to radioactive contamination, characterised in that it consists essentially in placing the surface of the contaminated material directly in contact with a solution of nitric acid HNO3 in which potassium permanganate (KMnO4) is dissolved for a specified period, in order to put the surface in a state such that the radioactive contamination can be easily removed, and in then removing the radioactive elements during and/or after the placing in contact with the abovementioned treatment agent.
