PURPOSE:To perform the winding tension control having no variation in the winding tension by controlling the field current in accordance with a coil diameter. CONSTITUTION:A coil diameter D21 is operated by inputting to a coil diameter arithmetic unit 20 a mandrel diameter D1, plate thickness (t), lap number (l), and correction coefficient alpha. This coil diameter 21 is inputted to a field current command arithmetic unit and phim/D is made constant by controlling field mag netic flux phim by outputting a field current command 24 so as to make phim/D constant according to the coil diameter D. The winding tension of a winding machine is thus made constant. The equation for finding the coil diameter D is D=D1+2.t.l.alpha, wherein D: coil diameter, D1: mandrel diameter, t: plate thickness, l: lap number and alpha: correction coefficient.
