PURPOSE:To prevent a downward velocity potential from being involved in the injection fuel and improve stratification of the air-fuel mixture by providing an ignition plug and a fuel injection valve on the upper side of a combustion chamber, and then directing the nozzle hole of the injection valve from the side of the combustion chamber in the horizontal direction. CONSTITUTION:Into the cylinder bore 4 in a cylinder part 2 is inserted a piston 5, and then, by means of a cavity 5a, opening toward the central part of the top face of the piston 5, is provided a main combustion chamber 6 within a combustion chamber made up of the three parties, such as the piston 5, the cylinder part 2 and a cylinder head part 3. In addition, an ignition plug 21 is provided on the cylinder head part 3, and located in such a manner that it is directed to the upper part of the main combustion chamber 6 and caused to offset a little from the center of the main combustion chamber 6 in the radial direction. And further, a fuel injection valve 22 is located so that it is directed to the upper part of the combustion chamber, and its nozzle hole 22a is directed from the side of the upper side of the combustion chamber toward the ignition plug 21. Thereby, a downward velocity potential can be prevented from being involved in the injection fuel, and stratification of the air-fuel mixture can also be improved.
