The invention relates to a hand-held writing instrument having a shaft-like grip part (3) which contains at least one writing refill (5, 6) which projects at the end region (7) of the grip part on the refill side with a section (8, 9) having a writing part (10, 11). In the end region (7) of the refill end, a masking band (14) is permanently arranged, this being capable of being guided around the writing part (10, 11) to mask the writing part (10, 11) with its opposite band end region (18) and capable of being releasably secured in this masking position. In order to use the instrument, the masking band (14) can be brought into a release position in which it is situated laterally next to the writing refill (5, 6). <IMAGE>
