Control system for a clutch (20) in a torque converter (4) of an automatic transmission, the clutch normally being engaged in a predetermined range of vehicle and engine operating conditions for efficient operation. The control system contains an atmospheric pressure sensor (34) for the release of the clutch in the predetermined range at relatively high altitudes to ensure that the torque converter can operate to increase the torque that can be transmitted, thereby making it possible to compensate for a reduced engine power at relatively high altitudes.
