PURPOSE:To obtain a coated hard member excellent in toughness as well as in wear resistance, by forming a coating layer consisting of Al2O3 as principal component and one or more kinds among compounds such as nitrides, oxides, etc., of Ti, Zr, etc., on the surface of a base material of ceramic, etc., into the prescribed thickness by a plasma CVD method. CONSTITUTION:The coating layer of 1-20mum thickness consisting of 50-99.9wt%, based on the total, of Al2O3 and one or more kinds among TiC, TiN, AlN, ZrN, Si3N4, TiO, and ZrO2 is formed on the surface of the base material of sintered hard alloy, ceramic, or cermet by the plasma CVD method so that Al2O3 content in the layers of <=5mum thickness adjacent on the base- material surface to be coated is regulated to 0.1-20%. The above member is applicable to various members requiring wear resistance, not to mention to cutting tools.
