PURPOSE:To enable the automation of the replacement of gas in a coiled pipe and the improvement in working efficiency and working environment by providing vacuum purging chambers adjacently to the inlet and outlet of a continuous annealing furnace and carrying the coiled pipe into the chamber, then sealing the prescribed gas therein. CONSTITUTION:The vacuum purging chamber 4 is provided adjacently to the inlet (furnace heating chamber 2 and furnace front chamber 1) of the continuous annealing furnace. The coiled pipe 8 is carried by a conveyor into the purging chamber 4. The door of the chamber 4 is thereafter closed and the air in the chamber 4 is discharged by a vacuum pump 5 through a duct 6 for discharge. The air in the coiled pipe 8 is also discharged together by the vacuum effect in this stage. An inert gas flows into the chamber 4 through a sealing duct to restore the pressure in the chamber 4 when the pump 5 is stopped at the point of the time when the vacuum is attained in the coiled pipe 8. The inert gas intrudes into the coiled pipe 8 in this stage and the air in the pipe is replaced with the inert gas. The vacuum purging chamber is provided adjacently to the outlet of the annealing furnace and the inert gas in the coiled pipe 8 is similarly replaced with the other gas.
