The invention relates to a reflectometer for examining glass fibres by means of an optical transmitter, a coupling part which contains a coupling fibre, and an optical receiver. In order to be able to use such a reflectometer even to detect defects at the start of a glass fibre to be examined, the coupling fibre (11) is ground on its end (12) averted from the semireflecting mirror obliquely with respect to its longitudinal axis (13) in such a way that the fraction (19) of the light (17) emanating from the transmitter which is reflected at this end runs to a large extent to the outer surface of the coupling fibre (11). The glass fibre (15) to be examined is arranged outside the longitudinal axis (13) of the coupling fibre (11) aligned in such a way that the light extends essentially parallel to its longitudinal axis (16). <IMAGE>
