A belt grinding machine has two belt grinding assemblies (5, 6), each having an endless grinding belt (16, 17) moving round a drive wheel and a contact wheel (7, 8). To be able to work a workpiece simultaneously at two opposite sides, the two belt grinding assemblies (5, 6) face each other with their contact wheels (7, 8). The workpiece-feed device (26) is provided with a workpiece holder (30) which is movable to and fro in the direction of the interspace (9) between the contact wheels (7, 8) and in whose workpiece fixture the workpiece (1) is displaceable perpendicularly to its faces (36, 37) to be worked. <IMAGE>
