The invention relates to a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) in which the real antenna is caused to oscillate mechanically and/or electronically transversely with respect to the observation direction, by means of an oscillating movement, in order to improve the azimuth resolution, and the antenna signal is sampled such that sorting is carried out on the basis of range rings. The intensity distribution of the spectrum-analysed range-ring signals is proportional to the intensity distribution over the azimuth angle. The angular resolution is thus produced by frequency resolution. An exemplary embodiment is described and the bases of the calculation for this purpose are given.
