It is known to excavate soils contaminated by light to medium hydrocarbons, such as oils, to treat them thermally or clean them by washing and provide them with soil bacteria in order to reuse the soils as cultivation soils. These known processes have the disadvantage that the soils must be excavated which represents a relatively high expense. In order to remove the contaminates from soils, according to the invention it is proposed that injection holes are introduced into the ground and from the deepest point of the injection hole a combustible mixture, preferably comprising a neutral gas and air excess, is ignited so that a high ambient temperature is inevitably generated such that the combustible constituents of the surrounding contaminated soil ignite, co-combust and thus, successively towards the surface of the ground, a thermal decomposition of the pollutants in the soils is unavoidably completed and at the surface the exhaust gases are collected by a hood-like shield and, purified by wet or dry methods, are released to the atmosphere in an environmentally tolerable manner.
