Adjustable, hydraulic shock absorber with a piston fixed on a hollow piston rod, the valve plates of the piston being supported by a control piston, displaceable on the piston rod, where necessary with the insertion of a helical spring for adjustment of the damping force. The intention in this was to obtain an increase of the damping force for an increasing vehicle load, the damping force on the piston of the shock absorber, for safety reasons, being automatically set to the maximum possible in the event of a failure of one of the control elements or of a pressure drop in the control system. For this purpose a stop, arranged at an interval from the control piston, is provided on the piston rod for each control piston, on that side of the control piston lying opposite the piston, on which stop the control piston is resiliently supported and the control chamber connected by way of the hollow space of the piston rod to a pressure intensifier, so that when the vehicle loading is reduced the control piston is displaced towards the stop.
