Fluorination of carbocyclic aromatic compounds

Process for the fluorination of an optionally substituted carbocyclic aromatic compound by passing an electric current through an electrolyte-mixture comprising hydrogen fluoride and an ammonium fluoride salt, in which electrolyte-mixture the carbocyclic aromatic compound has been incorporated and in which mixture the amount of hydrogen fluoride is more than 20%w of said mixture, whereby the ammonium fluoride salt is selected from a quaternary ammonium salt and a hydrofluoride salt of a nitrogenous organic base.
