PURPOSE:To maintain high coercive force, to make magnetic domains fine and obtain superior short-wavelength recording characteristics, and to reduce noises by providing a gaseous oxygen intake at the intermediate position of the angle of incidence of a vapor-deposition vapor flow and maximizing the oxygen concentration of the intermediate thickness layer of a magnetic thin film. CONSTITUTION:Vapor from a vapor source 6 is vapor-deposited on a nonmagnetic film 4 wound around a rotary drum 2 in a vacuum-depositing tank 1 and gaseous oxygen is put in vapor from gaseous oxygen gas intakes 8-10. The angle of incidence of the intake 10 on the film surface is set to the intermediate value of the other angle of incidence, and the intake 10 is positioned at the position where the thickness of the magnetic thin film becomes 2/5-4/5. Consequently, the oxygen concentration from the film surface to 1/5 as large as the film thickness is lowered to increase the reproducing output at the time of short-wavelength recording and the concentration of 1/5-3/5 film thickness is set to 15-40% as a maximum value to increase the coercive force and make magnetic domains fine; and the total concentration is adjusted to 10-30% and the reproducing output at the time of long-wavelength recording is made sufficient.
