PURPOSE:To absorb impact energy by coupling an energy absorbing element with a bumper, forming a rupture initiating means at the end of said energy absorbing element, and thereby generating a rupture continuous throughout the length of the energy absorbing element. CONSTITUTION:A step 15b is formed at the inner wall 15a of a side panel 15, and an energy absorbing plate 16 is affixed to said inner wall 15a in such a way as enclosing said step 15b. The closed cross-section set off by a side panel 15 and the energy absorbing plate 16 is filled with hard urethane resin 17a so as to form an energy absorbing element 17. At the front of this energy absorbing element 17, two boss pipes 18 are inserted penetrating the abovementioned inner wall 15a and the energy absorbing plate 16 in the car width direction, and a bumper 19 is mounted on these boss pipes 18. Accordingly, when a shock is applied to the bumper 19, the boss pipes 18 tears off the energy absorbing element 17 to provide shock damping effect.
