PURPOSE:To correct an azimuth error due to the magnetism of an iron component by finding an error based upon the means value of respective output values of one component of an azimuth detecting device when the other components has a maximum or minimum value, and correcting the other component according to the error. CONSTITUTION:Output values (X, Y) of two directional components detected by the azimuth detecting device draw a circular or elliptic track having its center at the origin O of an orthogonal coordinate system (X, Y). When the azimuth detecting device detects magnetic flux due to the magnetism of a body steel plate and other iron components, the circle C1 moves to the position of a circle C2 in parallel. The coordinates (-X, -Y) of the center of this circle C2 are errors. When one component is denoted as X and the other is denoted as Y, the Y-directional output value on condition that the X-directional output value has a maximum value Xmax or a minimum value Xmin is corrected by; subtracting an error -Y from the Y-directional component of the azimuth detecting device because -Y is the error.
