PURPOSE:To obtain an excellent fixing capacity with a less quantity of power consumption, by switching a fixation processing mode to at least high speed or low speed in accordance with the time elapsed since the power supply is made and the number of sheets to be used for picture formation continuously. CONSTITUTION:A CPU501 detects the time elapsed since the turned-on state of a main switch is detected by means of a main-switch sensor 507, namely, the time elapsed since the power supply is made to this copying machine by means of an internal software timer, etc., and, if the detected time exceeds a prescribed time, unconditionally starts the copying operation in the high-speed mode. Then, until the number of continuously copied sheets reaches n1 or n2, the CPU501 causes the copying machine to execute the copying operation in the high-speed mode in accordance with a signal from a copied sheet number sensor 509. When the number of copied sheets reaches the n1 or n2, temperature of a fixing roller is detected by means of a fixing thermistor 510 and, when the detected temperature is higher than a prescribed temperature, the high-speed copying operation is continued for the number of remaining sheets. If the detected temperature is lower than the prescribed temperature, the copying operation is carried out in the low-speed mode.
