PURPOSE:To safely unload a finely pulverized metal hydride from a hydrogen- storage container without danger, by removing hydrogen gas from the container, introducing a volatile neutral liquid free from oil and fat and evaporating the liquid to effect the coagulation of the metal hydride. CONSTITUTION:In the unloading of finely pulverized metal hydride from a container 1, a three-way joint 3 is attached to a main valve 2 for feeding and discharging, a valve 4 is opened, a vacuum pump 5 is operated and hydrogen gas in the container 1 is evacuated. The vacuum pump 5 is stopped, the valve 4 is closed, a valve 6 is opened, a pump 7 is operated and a volatile neutral liquid (e.g. trichloroethylene) free from oil and fat is introduced from a tank 8 into the container 1. When the liquid is introduced at an amount to be sufficient to impregnate the fine powder of metal hydride, the pump 7 is stopped and the valve 6 is closed. The fine powder of metal hydride is coagulated by opening the container 1 and rapidly evaporating the volatile liquid. The coagulated powder is crushed to a proper size and taken out of the container through the opening.
