During spraying, a gas stream extending outside the flame zone is directed on areas, next to the impingement zone of the flame, of the surface to be coated in such a way that, without significant effect on the flame, loose particles present on the workpiece surface in the surroundings of the impingement zone are blown away. This permits surface layers to be produced which are virtually free of porosity and layer defects caused by deposited particles.
