PURPOSE:To improve the durability of a universal joint and ensure water-proofing and dust-proofing by increasing the interval between two universal joints while reducing the swinging angles or bending angles of said universal joints, in the cover device of a transmission shaft device for a rough ground traveling four-wheel vehicle. CONSTITUTION:The rotation of an engine is transmitted to a transmission in a transmission case 60, and to a final reduction gear in a final reduction gear case 48 via a transmission shaft device 62. And, this rotation is transmitted to right and left rear wheels by means of rear axles. When the final reduction gear case 48, together with the rear wheels, is moved up and down, the transmission shaft device 62 swings centering around universal joint parts 80, 82, and is extended and contracted at a spline part. In this case, covers 96, 98, 100 which are fixed to the transmission case 60 and the final reduction gear case 48 are not rotated. In particular, since the covers 96, 98 are fixed to the cases 60, 48, the universal joints 80, 82 are sufficiently brought close to the cases 60, 48, or can be installed in such a way that they are partially placed in the cases 60, 48, increasing the interval between both universal joints. Thereby, the swinging angles of the universal joints 80, 82 can be reduced.
