PURPOSE:To reduce the program capacity in a printer and to save labor in writing a program each time different kind of machine is used, by mounting a ROM storing a printing code for printing a printing example therein, accessory ROM cartridges having the ROM mounted therein and capable of being connected to a printer main body and a switch selecting between ROM cartridges. CONSTITUTION:When a ROM cartridge 3 having ROM having a printing code for printing a printing example obtained using various extension functions mounted therein is connected to a printer main body, information is sent to a printing control circuit 1 by a connection judge circuit 2 and the ROM cartridge is selected by an ROM cartridge selection switch 4. With a control program, it is judged whether the ROM cartridge is connected at first and, when said cartridge is not connected, the receiving data from a host is read and, when connected, next, it is judged whether the ROM cartridge is selected and, when said cartridge is selected by the switch, the data of the ROM cartridge is read to perform printing.
