PURPOSE:To form a pastel color film having excellent color resistance and weatherability on an oxide film of Al by immersing an Al metal into a surface treating agent contg. a metal salt forming chromatic hydrated metal oxides and an org. polar solvent or chelate compd. CONSTITUTION:The surface treating agent for the Al metal having the oxide film is obtd. by using the metal salt forming the chromatic hydrated metal oxides by hydrolysis and the org. polar solvent and/or chelate compd. as essential components and further adding a fixable silicate thereto according to need. Salts of Fe, Co, In, Cr, Cd, Sn, Cu, Pb, Ni, Mn, V, etc. are used at 1-200g/l concn. for the above-mentioned metal salt. It is adequate to use polyamino carboxylic acids, polybasic acids or an amine compd. having >=2 amine groups in one molecule at 0.1-50g/l concn. for the chelate compd. An alkali silicate is preferably used at 0.1-100g/l concn. for the above-mentioned fixable silicate.
