PURPOSE:To produce difficult-to-putrefy hydroxyalkylated xanthan gum at a low cost in good yield, by adding an alkali metal hydroxide and an organic medium to a xanthan gum powder and reacting the resulting mixture with an alkylene oxide. CONSTITUTION:100pts.wt. crushed or finely ground xanthan gum powder is homogeneously mixed with 2-20pts.wt. alkali metal hydroxide (e.g., NaOH), 3-30pts.wt. organic solvent (e.g., methanol) and 0-10pts.wt. (at most 30% of water to obtain a mixture. 5-90pts.wt. lower alkylene oxide (e.g., ethylene oxide) is added to this mixture and reacted at 40-100 deg.C until the pressure in the system decreases to a constant value (3-12hr), and the obtained mixture is neutralized with an acid, dried and ground.
