In order to reduce the compressive stresses of a section 1, 2 of pipework brought up to an operating temperature which is greater than the ambient temperature, a cut, whose length is of the order of half the linear expansion of the free section is made in the pipework, the first end 31 of a sheath 3 is inserted in a first half-section 1, which sheath is welded to the inner surface 1b of this half-section, the other end 32, fitted with O-rings 5a, 6a housed in grooves 5, 6 is inserted in the second half-section 2, hot water at an intermediate temperature between the ambient temperature and the operating temperature is made to flow continuously in the pipework, and a weld bead 7 is made between the end chamfers 1a, 2a of the half-sections and the underlying sheath. The pipework is thus in extension at ambient temperature, in order to reduce the longitudinal compression at the operating temperature. <IMAGE>
