PURPOSE:To provide a magnetic recording medium having excellent weatherability and electromagnetic conversion characteristic by a vacuum deposition method by specifying the oxygen contents near the surface of a thin ferromagnetic metallic film and near a substrate at the contents larger than the oxygen content in an intermediate region thereof. CONSTITUTION:The oxygen contents near the surface of the thin magnetic metallic film of the magnetic recording medium provided with the thin ferromagnetic metallic film essentially consisting of Co, or Co and Ni or Co and Cr or Co, Ni and Cr by the vacuum deposition method as a magnetic recording layer on the nonmagnetic substrate and near the substrate thereof are specified to the content larger than the oxygen content in the intermediate region between the region near the surface in the thickness direction of the thin magnetic metallic film and the region near the substrate; in addition, the peak value of the S value expressed by the formula near the surface is equal to or larger than the Co content (atm%) and the peak value of the oxygen content near the substrate is >=20atm%. The oxygen in the thin ferromagnetic metallic film exists with a specific distribution in the thickness direction of the thin film.
