PURPOSE:To obtain a polyester having a high intrinsic viscosity, an excellent color tone and a thermotropic liquid crystal property and suited for use in, especially, fibers, films and other molded objects, by mixing a hydroxy aromatic carboxylic acid with an anhydride of a lower fatty acid and a specified polyester and polycondensing the mixture. CONSTITUTION:A hydroxy aromatic carboxylic acid (a) of formula I (wherein Ar is a bivalent aromatic group provided that the aromatic ring may have substituents) is mixed with 1.05-1.50 equivalent, per equivalent of (a), of an anhydride of a 2-5C lower fatty acid and a polyester (c) mainly consisting of an alkylene terephthalate and having an intrinsic viscosity of at least 0.2dl/g, and the mixture is brought to complete polycondensation. In this way, a thermoplastic liquid crystal polyester having an intrinsic viscosity of at least 0.5dl/g is obtained.
