PURPOSE:To obtain stable starting and accelerating characteristics by judging whether fuel exists in an auxiliary fuel pump when driving said pump and, when judged that no fuel exists, driving said pump at a lower driving frequency and for a longer time than when judged that fuel exists. CONSTITUTION:During the operation of an engine 1, the outputs of a water temp. sensor 39, an engine speed sensor 43, and a negative pressure sensor 45, etc., are read into an ECU 54. And, when judged in an operating condition that an auxiliary pump 29 is to be driven to feed auxiliary fuel to the engine, then, it is judged whether or not the engine temp. is above a defined temp., e.g., 80 deg.C which does not require the increased quantity of auxiliary fuel. And, when the judgement is 'NO' in which there is no evaporation of fuel while fuel exists in the auxiliary fuel pump 29, the auxiliary pump 29 is driven in accordance with an engine operating condition, etc. On the other hand, when the judgement is 'YES' in which fuel is evaporated and there is no fuel in the auxiliary pump 29, the auxiliary fuel pump 29 is driven at a lower driving frequency and for a longer driver time then in the case of the 'NO' judgement.
