The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for processing reel remnants in the form of so-called tubes of rotary printing machines. This processing causes problems in the prior art in that it takes place essentially manually. The invention provides a remedy to this problem by means of an automatic apparatus and a corresponding method, which, as well as having a high processing speed, are at the same time also quiet and dust-free. The apparatus according to the invention thus permits the following special features: - fully automatic feeding of material to be cut - reliable positioning of the material to be cut (trap doors which form troughs) - automatic fixing of the material to be cut (insertion of the cones into the cardboard tubes controlled via photocells) - the possibility of setting the cutting depth to within a millimetre with automatic knife tracking and simultaneous lowering of the material to be cut after every cutting operation - problem-free disposal with separation according to type ("white spoilage" and "cardboard tube") of the cutting refuse via trap doors and tilting chute. <IMAGE>
