In an ammunition box, a latch closure with a cover (24) is provided for a free flap (5) in a stack of ammunition boxes. In order to reduce the stack height and yet to be able to open any ammunition box in the stack individually, the end (8) of the edge of the flap (5) lies below the edge region (9) of the top part (2) in the closed position. The hinge-like roll (26) of the cover (24) is lowered from the outside into the top part (2) between the alignment lines of the outer side (14) and the inner side (21) of the closed flap (5) as near as possible to the outer side (14). The height of the spacer strip (6) is only such that the movable limb (27) of the cover (24) can be opened sufficiently. <IMAGE>
