A free-standing column shelf unit (1) serving as domestic or office furniture has tiers (2, 3, 4) following one another in the vertical direction and intended for depositing objects, which tiers are in each case bounded at the bottom and at the top by a tier board (5) and laterally by side walls (10) running between the associated tier boards (5) and holding them at a distance. The tier boards (5) and the side walls (10) are separate, detachably interconnected components, so that the column shelf unit (1) has a structure which can be disassembled, is like a construction kit and has a variable number of tiers. In each tier, there is present a pair of free-standing side walls (10) arranged parallel to one another on opposite shelf-unit sides, which side walls are seated on the upper side of the respectively lower tier board (5) and on which the respectively upper tier board (5) lies by way of its underside. The side-wall pairs of neighbouring tiers can be mounted offset by 90@ relative to one another. <IMAGE>
