The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for separating profile sections from layers of profile sections during the longitudinal conveying, in particular on a roller table, for example during conveying or transportation in finishing installations. During the longitudinal conveying of rollers, the profile sections are in general pushed against a straight stop and by this means come into an inclined position with respect to one another. Malfunctions then occur, during the formation of partial layers in transverse conveying, because the profile sections climbing on top of one another. These problems are solved with the invention in that the profile sections (4) are conveyed against a stop (10) inclined with respect to the conveying direction (F) in the conveying plane and subjected to preliminary separation, after which the profile sections (4) are aligned so that they are at a preselected equal distance from one another in such a manner that the profile sections (4) are conveyed onwards between the spacers (21). <IMAGE>
