PURPOSE:To perform photography by multiple exposure by opening a shutter plural times for exposure while holding the sensor gate of a CCD solid-state image pickup element in closed state, and then opening the sensor gate and obtaining an image pickup output signal from the CCD solid state image pickup element. CONSTITUTION:When multiple exposure photography is instructed on a console panel 9, the sensor gate part 1D of the image pickup element is closed and the shutter 2 is opened plural times to perform exposure. The sensor gate part 1D is held closedly so charges generated by the plural-time exposure are accumulated at light receiving parts 1A. The sensor gate part 1D is opened after the plural-time exposure and the charges accumulated at respective light receiving parts 1A are transferred to a vertical transfer register part 1B. The charges transferred to the vertical transfer register part 1B are transferred in order to a horizontal transfer register part 1C by one horizontal line at every horizontal period and read out in order thorugh the horizontal shift register part 1C, so that an image pickup signal appears at an output terminal 1E. Consequently, the multiple exposure is enabled.
