The invention concerns a method and a device for turning an object with hoisting gear, for example an ingot tong crane. One or more hoisting ropes or chains (2) are provided underneath the object (10) to be turned. The invention is characterised by the fact that hooks (9) for lifting or the like on the ends of hoisting ropes or chains (8) which are provided for combined action with the load-bearing element (4, 5) of the hoisting gear, are fastened to loops (3) or the like, which are provided at the ends of the chains (2) lying under the object (10) to be lifted. Then the load-bearing element (4, 5) is lifted by means of the hoisting device (11) of the hoisting gear, in order to tauten the chains (2, 8) and lift the object (10) off the ground. Next the object is turned by 180@ in the desired direction in the air. For this purpose, the chains (2, 8) are paid out sufficiently in one direction. Then the turned object (10) can be lowered to the ground again. <IMAGE>
