In the housing (10) of an electromagnet (11), the armature (24) is floatingly mounted. The lifting force of the armature (24) is transmitted to the closing element (32) of a directional valve (13) with the aid of a tappet (16). The tappet (16) lies largely in a spot-shaped fashion on the armature (24) so that a uniform transmission of force from the armature (24) to the tappet (16) and thus to the closing element (32) is possible. The electromagnet (11) is of simple and cost-effective design and has a long service life. <IMAGE>
