The by-pass valve serves to protect rotary pumps from low-load damage. A valve body is designed as a three-way splitting valve and splits the pump current in a predetermined stroke area in such a way that the consumer is served and in addition sufficient circulating current is recycled so that the transport agent is not overheated. As valve housing one can use standard housings of shut-off valves or dirt catchers. All moveable internal parts can be replaced through a single installation opening so that in chemical installations when the product is changed for the purpose of energy saving in each case suitable inserts can be selected.
