In order, in a roller grate which is composed of individual bars (5) and in which fresh air is conveyed from the inside to the outside into the charge lying on the grate, to bring it about that the fresh-air supply to the charge is independent within wide limits of the resistance offered to the air circulation by the charge, it is proposed that openings (17) for the fresh air formed between the grate bars (5) offer a considerably greater resistance to the fresh air than the charge. This is preferably brought about by the area of the air gaps amounting to less than 3% of the roller surface. <IMAGE>
