PURPOSE:To obtain glutathione in high yield and in high purity, by treating a glutahione-containing solution with a strongly acidic cation exchange resin containing divinylbenzene by a specific method, eluting adsorbed glutathione with an aqueous solution of an organic acid salt, etc., and collecting glutathione from an eluate. CONSTITUTION:A glutathione-containing solution such as extracted solution of yeast mold, extracted solution of animal cell, etc., is firstly treated with a strongly acidic cation exchange resin containing >=12wt% divinylbenzene to remove alkali metals, glutamic acid, etc. Then, the prepared treated solution is adjusted to preferably pH 2-2.5 and passed through a strongly acidic cation exchange resin containing <=6wt% divinylbenzene usually at 0.4-0.8 SV to adsorb glutathione. Adsorbed glutathione is eluted with an aqueous solution of ammonium, sodium salt, etc., of organic acid or phosphoric acid usually at 0.5-2mol/l salt concentration at pH 5.5-6.5 and under flow velocity condition of 0.5-1.5 SV. Then, glutathione is recovered from an eluate usually by copper salt method.
