PURPOSE:To quickly heat hot metallic billets and to shorten the length of a heating furnace by carrying said billets into the heating zone of the furnace where the temp. higher than in an extraction side furnace is maintained, conveying the billets to the extraction port side and passing a combustion gas from the charging port side of the high temp. to the extraction port side. CONSTITUTION:The hot billets which are the materials to be heated are carried through the charging port 7 into the heating zone 2 and are conveyed through a holding zone 3 to the extraction port 9 side of the walking beam type heating furnace provided with top firing burners 5, side firing burners 6 and an in- furnace conveyor 8. On the other hand, the temp. in said heating furnace 4 is set higher in the heating zone 2 than in the extraction port 9 side. The combustion gas is passed from the high temp. side of the charging port 7 side toward the extraction port 9 side. The temp. at the edges of the hot billets is thereby quickly elevated, by which the edges are quickly heated. The heating time is thus reduced and the waste heat is efficiently recovered on the low temp. side, by which the consumption of the heat quantity is reduced.
