PURPOSE:To obtain a medium having high output, high S/N, and good service life by providing continuous cracks to a magnetic layer of a magnetic recording medium on a substrate, CONSTITUTION:A magnetic metal such as Fe or alloy magnetic metal such as Fe-Co is deposited to 0.03-0.6mum. by a vapor growth method on the substrate consisting of Al, etc. The cracks having 0.05-0.5mum width are provided at 100-1,000 pieces/mm density over the entire region of the magnetic layer in non-direction alloy or optional directions. The surface thereof is coated with a protective film consisting of Cr, etc., and having 0.01-0.15mum thickness. The high output, high resolving power and service life are obtd. by providing the continuous cracks to the magnetic layer. The effect thereof is particularly remarkable with a hard disk.
