PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic disk having high durability and service life and good productivity by providing at least one layer of intermediate layer essentially consisting of MoS2 to the magnetic layer side of a nonmagnetic substrate surface. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic layer 2 is formed on the substrate 1 consisting of Al, etc., by vapor deposition of a magnetic metal such as Fe or alloy magnetic metal such as Co-Ni or the oxide thereof to about 0.03-0.6mum thickness. The intermediate layer 3 which consists essentially of MoS2 and is incorporated therein with about 10-0.05wt% C, Cr, etc., to improve mechanical strength, binding characteristic and corrosion resistance is deposited in a vapor phase on the magnetic layer and the protective film 4 consisting of Cr, etc., alone or the oxide thereof, etc. is deposited thereon in a vapor phase. The thin film type magnetic disk having the high durability and service life is obtd. with the good productivity according to the above-mentioned constitution. The intermediate layer 3 may be provided between the layer 2 and the substrate 1 or the layer 2 may be sandwiched by the layer 3.
