PURPOSE:To detect a rectangle at high speed by a circuit constitution of small scale by calculating the position of the vertexes of the rectangle included in a picture according to the projected images to the plural axes of a binarization picture. CONSTITUTION:A binarization part 20 binarizes a digital picture inputted by an input part 10. In a projection part 30, projection parts 31-33 perform the projection to the X axis, the Y axis, the XY axis of respectively different directions. The peak extraction parts 44-46 of a feature point detection part 40 extract the positions of positive and negative peaks (PX, QX, RX, SX), (PY, QY, RY, SY), (PXY, QXY, RXY, SXY) on the secondary differential image of the output of secondary differential parts 41-43. The top candidate calculation part 51 of a top position calculation part 50 extracts the two sets of coordinate groups as the candidates of the rectangular vertexes, a testing part 52 compares the positions of the vertexes of the two sets of the rectangles ABCD and A'B'C'D' with the output of the peak extraction part 46 and outputs the coinciding top candidate as a desired rectangle.
