PURPOSE:To safely produce the titled compound useful as a synthetic intermediate for fungicide and insecticide, under mild reaction condition at a low cost, by reacting a phenylmethylsulfoxide derivative with acetic anhydride and hydrolyzing the reaction product. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound of formula III can be produced by reacting a compound of formula (R1 is lower alkyl; R2 is H, lower alkyl or halogen; n is 0-2) with a compound of formula (R3CO)2O (R3 is lower alkyl or phenyl) in an inert solvent (e.g. toluene) at 50-150 deg.C and hydrolyzing the resultant compound of formula II in the presence of an acid (e.g. acetic acid) or a base (e.g. pyridine) preferably in nitrogen gas, etc., at 0-100 deg.C for 0.5-25hr.
