PURPOSE:To increase a Kerr rotating angle and to permit reading out with a good S/N by using an alloy having a specific compsn. to constitute a thin magnetic film having the axis of easy magnetization in the direction perpendicu lar to the film plane. CONSTITUTION:The compsn. of the alloy forming the amorphous magnetic film having the axis of easy magnetization in the direction perpendicular to the film plane is expressed by {Sm1-alpha(Fe1-gammaCogamma)alpha}1-gammaMgamma}, where M=1 kinds among B, C, Al, Si, Bi, and Ge and the alloy compsn. range is 0.6<=alpha<=0.9, 0.01<=beta<=0.99, 0.01<=gamma<=0.1. The thin film is required to be constituted of the amorphous alloy so as to have substantial magnetic anisotropy as the axis of easy magnetization is directed to the direction perpendicular to the film plane. The thin film is formed by a sputtering method or vacuum deposition method for the above-mentioned purpose. The Kerr rotating angle is thereby substantially increased and the reading out with the good S/N ratio is permitted.
