PURPOSE:To produce the objective compound over a long period in high productivity, by contacting cyclohexanone oxime in vapor phase with a specific crystalline zeolite catalyst surface-treated with a specific organometallic compound. CONSTITUTION:epsilon-Caprolactam useful as a raw material for nylon, etc., is produced by contacting cyclohexanone oxime in vapor phase with a specific crystalline zeolite catalyst having a control index of 1-12. In the above process, the catalyst is treated its surface with an organometallic compound of formula R4-nMXn (R is 1-6C alkyl or phenyl; M is Si or Ge; X is Cl or 1-6C alkoxy; n is 1 or 2) and preferably has an outer surface area of the pore of >=5m<2>/g, especially an aluminosilicate zeolite or metallosilicate zeolite having an Si/Al or Si/metal atomic ratio of >=500. The conversion of the raw material and the selectivity to the objective compound can be improved and the catalytic life can be prolonged by the suppressed carbon deposition on the catalyst. |
