PURPOSE:To execute operation with a stable secondary combustion rate and reduction efficiency by calculating the kind of an inert gas to be blown, the flow rate of the gas and analysis values of components of an exhaust gas during the reduction in a melt reduction furnace and controlling charge automatically. CONSTITUTION:Ore, carbonaceous material, etc., are charged from a storage hopper 5 through a charging hopper 6 into the melt reduction furnace 1. The inert gas is blown into the furnace from bottom blowing tuyeres 7 and gaseous O2, etc., are blown therein from a top blowing lance 4. The above-mentioned carbonaceous material is thereby burned and the above-mentioned ore is reduced by melting to form the metal 2 in the furnace bottom and slag 3 thereon. The secondary combustion rate in the furnace 1 is periodically calculated in an arithmetic processing unit 11 from the kind and flow rate of the inert gas to be blown into the furnace 1 and the analysis values of the components of the exhaust gas to be discharged through a duct 9 from the furnace throat to an exhaust gas treatment installation 8, as measured by an analyzer 10. The carbonaceous material is automatically charged into the furnace when the calculated value does not attain the prescribed range and the ore is automatically charged therein when the value exceeds said range.
